Castles in Poland - brief introduction to Polish castles
Poland is famous for its castles. Actually, there are over seven hundred castles in Poland. Their condition, age and attractiveness vary, but there are some that need to be mentioned here. As for the size, the biggest castle in Poland is Malbork Castle located in the city of Malbork, Pomerania. It had been built in XIII century
by the Grand Teutonic Master.
It is a massive Teutonic
castle, on of the greates strongholds of medieval Europe.
The second place goes to Wawel Castle, located in the city of Krakow. It had been built by Polish kings between XII and XIII century and since had become the residence of Polish kings for several hundred years, until the capital of Poland had been moved from Krakow to Warsaw.
It used to be the place of coronation of Polish kings, and now it is one of the biggest and most interesting of Polish museums.
Ksiaz Castle is the third largest castle in Poland and had been built in the end of XIII century. It is located on the outskirts of the city of Walbrzych, Lower Silesia. It had never been as important as Malbork Castle or Wawel Castle, but its magnitude and location - on the rocky mountain top - make it a stunning example.
These three are the pearls of Polish castles and certainly these castles are not for sale, al least as far as we know. There are some set touristic routes which lead from castle to castle.
